Description
This is my first Spartan to offer to the public.

I have chosen to update the interior to a simple contemporary style rather than try to restore the original details. While I appreciate the old styling I wanted to simplify the details while paying homage to the classic lines of the Spartan.
As a master cabinet maker who has the ability to create things not commercially available, like maple veneers, I found that I could improve on the already well-made Spartan and make subtle changes which will make a difference in longevity, aesthetics, and functionality.
The exterior has been polished and kept as close to original as possible. The screen doors were completely disassembled, refinished and reinstalled, but with modern techniques that eliminated the weaker original corners.
Maple: Stronger and Scratch resistant without extra weight.
All the interior walls and ceilings are new Maple rather than the basic Birch paneling. In woodcraft wood is graded by hardness. Maple is harder than Birch. The difference is evident with scratch and dent resistance and aesthetically with a more dense woodgrain.
Because ⅛” Maple plywood isn’t commercially available, I was able to veneer my own plywood in my shop. The result is a harder wood finish with no increase in weight. The Maple grain is deeper and allows a richer look as it absorbs varnishes deeper into the grain.
The Cabinets are all Rift Sawn White Oak, Rift sawn White Oak has a more uniform grain pattern which I felt is a nice complement to the Natural Maple. All the woodwork has been finished with an ultra low VOC finish. Normal lacquers and varnishes can take months to “ gas off”. I have used this finish exclusively in the Teardrop Trailer business I founded.
I have tried to incorporate curves in places like the cabinets and bed to keep the aesthetic of the Spartan intact, and allow hints of times past to come out in subtle, yet noticeable ways.
All the window frames are built as a unit to enable easy removal in case the screens need to be replaced. Four screws allow quick access to them.
I wanted the interior of the window jambs to be all wood as opposed to the raw aluminum, again, its the wood-worker in me who prefers a clean, more finished look than metal can provide. The result is the perfect intersection of function and form-- rigid and industrial on the outside, yet pleasing to the eye and touch in the living spaces.
Originally Spartans had no fresh water or grey water storage tanks, and I have opted to stay with that plan. Although this could be used as a traveling camper I imagine this being used in a semi permanent location. Water, electric, and plumbing are functional and can be used with any campground type of connection.
The corner table is solid White Oak with grain running on the diagonal. I kept the original bath/shower configuration and completely stripped the old paint off and had an Epoxy paint sprayed on all the walls and ceiling. The floor has penny tile and there is a new Dometic toilet.
I chose Marmoleum flooring to give some contrast to the wood walls. It is a floating floor that also has a cork underlayment to add cushion as well as insulation.
The electrical system has been redone and includes all new wiring, modern 3 prong grounded outlets, and a circuit panel with modern and safe breakers. The HVAC unit is a Mini-split system, which combines heat and air, and when paired with the "Colorado" level of insulation should keep its new owner comfortable year round in heat or cold.
About Kevin Molick:
My background is in custom woodworking and then as a general contractor before I founded a teardrop trailer company ( Timberleaf Trailers) nine years ago. I sold that business last year and have built my own personal shop behind our home. Rebuilding this old Spartan has been a way to stay busy while continuing to utilize my creative skills. Through this endeavor I've met and been involved with a great group of fellow vintage lovers.
