1960 Holiday House 17’

To the vintage trailer enthusiast, a vintage Holiday House is considered to be the ‘holy grail’ of mid century trailer design. Produced in limited numbers, with very few remaining, the Holiday House is sought after by those who want one and deeply loved by those who own one. Now is your chance to own an iconic design of mid-century modern Americana.

Presented is a largely original, 1960 17 foot self-contained model with shower and bathroom. Owned for some 15 years, this trailer was found in the dry Nevada desert town of Gerlach, well before Gerlach was considered cool with the Burning Man festival. Refurbished over 5 years, this trailer has since been stored in an aircraft hangar and used exclusively to camp in local Tahoe campgrounds. We never traveled outside the Tahoe basin with it. The project included removing the interior paneling, repairing and replacing framework and flooring as necessary. Emphasis was placed on preserving originality where possible. As a result, the original cooktop, oven, sink, refrigerator, countertops, table with original leaf, shower stall, toilet, and windows were all included. The original plumbing, sink fixtures, line voltage lighting, and air-pressure water system, (works great, and silent), original on-board air compressor, all function well. The interior was replaced during the refurbishment and is finished with new insulation behind hand-shellacked birch paneling, vinyl flooring, custom mod curtains and LED lighting. Additional work involved upgrading and expanding the 12v electrical system and a complete reupholster of all seating surfaces. The dinette area features original plexiglas wraparound windows as well as original jalousie windows throughout. One interior wall was reduced to countertop height and topped with matching formica. This small change opens up the entire interior, making this most desirable, and smallest 17 footer feel absolutely enormous inside. At 7’ tall and with the huge front plexiglass windows, the interior birch glows with natural light and feels at once cozy, yet open and modern. Like submarines? Buy a Mainstream, I mean Airstream! Rather experience something truly unique and authentically rare? Holiday House. Recent frame-off restorations have sold for more than twice the asking price.

As a result of exclusively dry camping here in Tahoe, the water heater, shower and refrigerator were never used nor restored. This rare self-contained model Holiday House has a holding tank and the toilet was also never used. The exterior skin is all original, it has some bumps and scrapes but is very presentable and it’s only original once. Polished with Nuvite aircraft polish and painted a deep Tahoe blue.
